“I’m half Japanese, half Swiss. When I was little, I spent summers in Osaka with my mom. We lived with my grandmother, Omama, and visited my aunt, uncle, and cousins. You’re not supposed to remember anything before you’re three, but I have strong impressions from those trips. The smells, the sounds. The feeling of the humidity in the air. It’s even hotter now, but summer is still my favorite season in Japan. I can’t imagine visiting any other time.”
Thursday afternoon, a modernist building with star-shaped windows, she tells us about the architect, a woman.
Hardwood floors painted white, her dog sits at her feet, stacks of art books line the walls.
She carefully lays out her paintings on the floor, lightly brushed with color, we tell her we love them.
